ACTER Hosts Successful Webinar on Transdisciplinary Practice

On 18 January 2025, ACTER organised a webinar titled “Exploring Joint Action to Address Complex Problems,” which focused on transdisciplinary (TD) practice to tackle complex health and social development issues. The event gathered students and professionals from various fields and levels to discuss the significance of collaborating across disciplines and sectors.

Participants engaged in plenary discussions, breakout sessions, and Q&A, exploring the challenges and potential solutions in implementing TD approaches. Key topics included understanding TD practices, overcoming barriers to collaboration, and fostering workplace development.

The webinar highlighted several challenges in TD problem-solving, such as resistance from professionals, communication barriers, and lack of resources. Proposed solutions included establishing common goals, building trust among stakeholders, and implementing capacity-building initiatives.

Participants expressed keen interest in integrating TD practices into their workplaces, suggesting the development of collaborative problem-solving approaches and enhancing both technical and soft skills. They also emphasised the importance of drawing from experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic to promote the co-design and co-implementation of community solutions.

The event also addressed the need for practical support and resources, with suggestions ranging from peer mentoring systems to real-world application exercises. Breakout groups focused on various aspects of TD practice, including HR capacity-building, communication strategies, and cross-sector collaboration.

This webinar marks an important step in ACTER’s mission to promote transdisciplinary approaches to complex problem-solving, thereby facilitating future initiatives and collaborations in this crucial field.
